Home      About us

Fishing has always been an important activity in Tongan culture and sport fishing really started in earnest in the early 1980’s. TIGFA was established to represent the fishing interests of Nuku’alofa and Vava’u sport fishermen and up to June 2002, TIGFA was responsible for all Record Keeping.

The VSFC was officially established in July 2002, being affiliated to the nation’s parent organisation Tonga Game Fish Association (TIGFA) and a member of International Game Fish Association (IGFA)

The Club Base & Weigh Station is located at Mango’s Restaurant right on the foreshore of Neiafu Harbour, Vava’u.

The club started it’s own Records Data Base and this compliments the historical TIGFA National Records.

The club has established an annual awards night to acknowledge angling achievements of resident Vava’u members and the Heinz Koster Memorial Trophy is the most coveted award of all.

Heinz Koster sadly passed away in August 2008 – he was the longest standing IGFA Representative for Tonga and also President of both TIGFA & VSFC. He was a major force in steering the sport to what it has become today and we are indebited to his past leadership, foresight and commitment. During his many exploits on the water he caught 54 billfish single handed and at the time of his death he held two “All Tackle Records” for Blue and Striped Marlin. It was therefore befitting to acknowledge Heinz for his service to the sport and club and establish a very special memorial trophy that recognises the highest achievements in angling skill throughout the Kingdom – The Heinz Koster Memorial Trophy.

Mango Cafe is one of the more recent Restaurant & Bar establishments that have opened in Neiafu and it is part of Shane Walker's Moorings Group. The restaurant offers quality hospitality, great food and an impressive beverage selection together with a wonderful position right on the foreshore of Port of Refuge Harbour. The staff are special .... and on numerous occasions they entertain their guests with traditional Tongan dancing and singing just to make sure you feel at home and welcome. The Club is indebted to Shane for his generosity and support in offering these wonderful facilities as a club base - for a Sport Fishing Club, you will not find anywhere better. Mangos has it own marine dock facilities and the Clubs Weigh Station is right there - Restaurant patrons can simply sit back and enjoy good food & company and watch the game fleet come in, tie up and weigh fish, all less than 20 ft from the establishment.

Mango carries the theme of fishing not only in their cuisine but around the walls of the restaurant. You will see stunning hand crafted trophies of Marlin, Sailfish, Mahimahi, Wahoo and Yellow Fin and in the club cabinet, a collection of photos showing notable catches form the early days to present time.
